2010 Networking Events::Who said the Wedding Season is Over...

This week has been a busy Networking week for wedding pros in Chicago.  Technically, the wedding season has ended but industry and wedding professionals have been busy putting together some fabulous events this month for us to network and relax after a long 2010 season.

Scott and Cara Nava, Owners of Carasco Photography

On October 20, Scott and Cara Nava a/k/a "Power Couple," owners of Carasco Photography, hosted 8 til 8, an exclusive planner event, to benefit Wish Upon Wedding.  I had a great time meeting new friends and networking with some I already know at this event that was held at The Underground.  Sushi, wine and sake was provided by Sunda.  Delicious sweets provided by my girl, Naomi of TipsyCake and beautiful floral by Topiarius.

I met three wonderful individuals at the 8 til 8 event that I would like to mention:

Ben Reid of Foodie Registry (just recently wrote about on my blog, Daily Inspiration 2011::FoodieRegistry.com); Sharon Patrice of Simply Perfect Peace Events who also wrote a great blog regarding these events as well, Networking Chicago Style - 8 til 8 and TheKnot.com.  Check it out! and Susan Metropoulos of The Left Bank.

I would like to share a few pictures (courtesy of Carasco Photography) from this event...

On October 20, The Knot hosted a night of Glitz and Glam for wedding pros at the Chicago History Museum.  This event was fabulous.  I met some great people and ran into some industry friends.  Loved the Ice Sculptures by Nadeau's Ice Sculptures, Inc., enjoyed the food from Parties & Special Events by Lettuce Entertain You and the beautiful florals by Dilly LillyMy business associate, Bryant Johnson of Steelelife Gallery and I had a great time networking and meeting peeps...we even took some time out to take some "silly" photos at the Shutterbooth booth.  Kudos again to The Knot and founder of The Knot, Carley Roney for hosting such a fabulous event.  *The Knot is hosting a virtual food drive to benefit Feeding America.  Click here to participate.

On October 21, M&M The Special Events Company hosted their merger with True Cuisine Catering at Danada House in Wheaton.  I was not able to attend this event due to client meetings but I do appreciate the invite because M&M is one of my preferred vendors who has done work for me and they are GREAT!

Networking is so important.  I talk about it more in a previous blog entry, Why Networking is ImportantThe month is not over and I still have a few networking events to attend this month, as well as November and December.  I love this time of year because it gives all of us a chance to meet, talk, share, etc., without all the pressure of work (though in a sense we are still working)...

Ciao for now,

To be continued...

The Importance of Following Up

In Part II of my "Networking" series, I decided to write about The Importance of Following Up because in the wedding/event planning industry it is so important to follow up with clients, potential clients, as well as organizations, vendors and other professionals in the industry especially after an initial consultation, meeting or networking event.

Since Social Networking has pretty much taken over, it is equally important to follow up on inquiries you receive on Twitter and Facebook as well. This issue is important to me because there are so many professional organizations (in this particular industry) that have industry professional counterparts in charge of the organization(s) and recently I have been reading complaints from other industry professionals (and have personally experienced this myself) that when reaching out to these industry professional counterparts via email, Twitter and/or Facebook with a question, etc., they do not respond. This is a huge pet peeve of mine and in my opinion very disrespectful and unprofessional (wouldn't you agree?). Just imagine how our clients, potential clients or other professional counterparts feel when we do not respond to an email that was sent or return a phone call. Follow up calls, emails, etc., should be within a 24 or 48 hour period. In this business, honestly, saying we have been too busy, etc. for clients, etc., is an absolute no no.

In an article that I read entitled, "Networking Follow Up - Inquiry," the author Chi Chi Okezie (owner/producer of SIMPLEnetworking, LLC in Metro-Atlanta, GA) states:

"The networking event is officially over and you have gotten some great contacts and possibly leads that can turn into referrals or viable business contacts." Chi Chi goes on to state that as a networking professional, you clearly understand the importance of follow up in a timely and respectful manner. Facilitating business and building your network is key and that is your focus when meeting other business professionals. She then poses the questions, "What are ways professionals can properly follow up with their business counterparts? How can professionals engage their counterparts and be unique in their follow up styles? How can professionals continue building strong relationships after the networking event?"

Some tips to follow up with clients, potential client and/or other professionals in your industry are:
  • Prepare a handwritten note or card. Personally, I will send an email to clients, potential clients and/or professional counterparts thanking them, etc. It's a personal touch and people love that.
  • If you are short on time, opt for a less personal but equally effective thank you by sending a text message to the prospective client's cell phone thanking them for their time.
  • Schedule a follow up meeting.
  • Always say thank you.
  • Ask for referrals. If they are happy with your services they will give you names of others that will benefit from your services. This is networking!!!
***
When I receive an email from a client, potential client, professional counterpart, vendor, etc., 99% of the time I immediately respond and/or follow up (and if I do not follow up that same day, I will within 24 hours). Afterwards, I would say that most of my responses that I receive from the client, vendor, etc., that I have responded to, email me to thank me for such a quick response. I am invited to open houses, grand openings, anniversary parties, and networking events (just to name a few) all the time by industry professionals, and it would be rude if I did not respond to these individuals who take the time out of their busy schedule to invite me (even if I cannot attend, I still RSVP). Honestly, it is an honor that any of these industry professionals that have invited me and continue to invite my staff and I to their events think enough of us to invite us.

Modern technology has set it up that we can receive emails on our phone and alerted of Facebook and Twitter messages as well. There is almost no excuse not to respond to messages within a 24 or 48 hour time period and most of us do have assistants who can respond as well. The bottom line is this, "the follow up sets the platform for a strong business or social relationship. The follow up can define your professionalism and etiquette style for connecting with people. The follow up can also determine how well your business counterpart can trust you. It is quite evident that professionals should really hone into their follow up skills for networking success!" Why Networking is Important...

WHY NETWORKING IS IMPORTANT IN THIS INDUSTRY
(EVENT PLANNING)

I was inspired to write about the importance of networking because I have taken on a new venture in addition to my business, Events by Candace and in doing so, I realized how IMPORTANT networking is. As an event planner and business owner, it is VERY important for me to network and attend networking events. I think it is important to network with other event planners, wedding planners and/or others in the industry to get ideas, share experiences, etc. Besides networking with event planners, I also network with others in the event planning industry (hotel catering managers, caterers, pastry chefs, photographers, DJ’s, florists, etc.). This is equally important as well because I cannot recommend these individuals to clients if I have not personally met them myself or have seen their work, etc.

What I have learned in this industry ... YOU cannot be afraid or shy because you have to network and introduce yourself to the world. I don’t mind meeting others in my field of work because I don’t worry about other event planners competing with me … I believe WE all have our OWN unique talent and creativity. We should not focus so much on competing against one another, because (1) you lose sight of your goals and (2) we actually might need one another in certain circumstances. For instance, if I am booked on a certain date, I will most likely call upon another event planner that I have met, networked with, etc., to ask if they would be interested in an event that I am not available for. Or let’s say I need to know about a particular DJ, photographer or venue and I know that one of my fellow event planners has worked with this particular individual, company or venue…because I have networked with them and formed a relationship with them, I will not hesitate to call upon them for any suggestions and/or feedback they can give. I was once told by a prominent wedding planner in Chicago that “we should view one another as colleagues, not competitors,” because at the end of the day everyone has their niche and there are enough weddings and/or parties for everyone to plan.

TWO important things to remember:

1. Attend all networking events with a specific purpose in mind.

I’ll admit, I’m the sort of networker who attends events with the idea that I might meet someone interesting … someone with similar passions … someone who might be able to help me but, on the other hand, might not … and that’s okay! Attending a networking event can be a worthwhile endeavor indeed … as long as you have an MO. If you show up with a specific goal, find someone who shares the same goals and ideas as you, get their card, email them and set up a meet and greet.

2. Surround yourself with people who can help you.

The book, "How To Be Useful discusses the Master Mind," a construct by Napoleon Hill in which you create a group of people dedicated to furthering the interests of those within the group. Ideally, those you choose for your group are superior to you in varying ways, whether in ideas, creativity, access to contacts, etc. It makes sense to surround yourself with those who have something you lack and need, and networking events are certainly ideal places to find such people.

It’s important to form relationships with others in the industry. I enjoy and LOVE to network and market myself and business. If I don’t put myself or company out there, no one else will. And let’s not forget the importance of Facebook and Twitter. I use both social networking websites to promote my business. I have met so many individuals in the industry, as well as clients from both sites. In the two years I have been in business, I have attended open houses at various venues, photography studios, floral shops, restaurants, etc., and various industry networking events (and the invites are still coming). From ALL of the events I have attended, I have met many individuals in the industry, gotten their cards, followed up, set up meetings, and most importantly … formed a business relationship ... and I continue to work hard to form and build these relationships for my business, as well as for my clients, but for now...

Happy Planning!

SPECIAL NOTE to event planners and anyone else in the industry … In the next couple of months, I will be working to host an open house with individuals in the event planning industry to re-introduce a gallery that can host weddings, wedding receptions, birthday celebrations, etc., etc. DETAILS WILL BE COMING SOON. If you would like to be a part of this fabulous event and see what this gallery has to offer for you and your client(s) or future client(s), please email me your information so that I can put you on the guest list and send you the information. Also, I will be INTRODUCING the OWNER and GALLERY soon.
